Research links climate change patterns to El Nino

I found this study by reading the blog at AccuWeather.com.  If you are interested in climate, then you should spend time reading what the meteorologists over there have to say.

A study by 3 researchers and published in the Journal of Geophysical Research has concluded that the weather variations (both increases and decreases) are the result of natural climate processes. They find that the Southern Oscillation is a key indicator of changing global atmospheric temperatures seven months later.

The paper is titled “Influence of the Southern Oscillation on tropospheric temperature” and following is the abstract:

Warming Trend: PDO And Solar Correlate Better Than CO2

Watts Up With That – January 25, 2008

Watts Up With That recently did an analysis and sparked a great deal of discussion on the possible causes of global warming. The analysis was done based on the paper “US Temperatures and Climate Factors since 1895” written by Mr. D’Aleo, a meteorologist, AMS Fellow, and Executive Director of ICECAP.

The paper and commentary is about the correlation between CO2 and the average temperature as well as the average temperature with solar activity. The true discussion should be about causality since that is the important issue.  However it is a logical discussion that without correlation there may not be any causality.

The persistent role of the Sun in climate forcing

Danish National Space Center – March 2007

Once again, we find that the scientific understanding of our complicated climate is evolving. I repeat my call for more effort and concentration in this area of science since it appears that causality of climate change is not fully understood (comments by a famous politician not withstanding).

This study points out that there appears to be something missing between the causes of solar activity and other influences. When you see a claim such as "one can only wonder about the quality of the surface temperature record" then you start to question what is missing.

Yet over the past 20 years the solar cycle remains fully apparent in variations both of tropospheric air temperature and of ocean sub-surface water temperature.

Global Warming Is Man-Made’ Claims Study

LifeStyleExtra – August 8, 2007

This article cites a study done that shows that variations of solar activity cannot account for the current changes in temperature and puts the blame on man-made sources of global warming.

The study was done by Ka-Kit Tung and other colleagues at the University of Washington where Mr. Tung is a mathematician professor. The study was published in Geophysical Research Letters.

I am concerned that this is the “first time a statistically significant global temperature signal has been found for the 11-year [solar] cycle.” I have been saying for some time now that we needed to understand these various attributes and we need to spend more time incorporating them into our models. I look forward to more work that is developed off of Mr. Tung’s effort.

Tempest In A Teapot

Investors Business Daily – July 25, 2007

Significant quote:

A private firm’s downgrade of its hurricane forecast raises an obvious question: If scientists can’t get near-future projections in a limited area right, how can they predict the climate decades from now?

I have been suggesting for quite some time that the first step in a global war on climate change begin in a fairly modest way. Instead of implementing extremely tough sanctions against energy use, we need to invest a relatively small amount of money to better understand our environment.

Sun’s Direct Role in Global Warming May Be Underestimated, Duke Physicists Report

Duke University – September 30, 2005

This is a fairly old report but it is important since it points out that global climate models still need to be updated to reflect the changes in solar activity. Many of the studies and predictions of climate models that we read about are based on models that are fairly old (some have been around for decades). This article points out that these models need to be re-examined.

At least 10 to 30 percent of global warming measured during the past two decades may be due to increased solar output rather than factors such as increased heat-absorbing carbon dioxide gas released by various human activities, two Duke University physicists report.

Climate change and cosmic rays

Danish National Space Center

I usually write about articles that appear on the web but I am going to vary from that in this instance to talk about a site. The Danish National Space Center, which appears to have some relationship with the Technical University of Denmark, has several pages dedicated to the theories of cosmic rays and their influence on clouds on planet Earth. I tend to be a little skeptical about this line of reasoning but have now read enough about it to think that there may be some level of influence in this area.

Global Warming: Fact, Fiction and Political Endgame

Townhall.com – February 26, 2007

This is a commentary article about Al Gore, his recent accolades for “An Inconvenient Truth”, and some of the background science of global climate change.  It is a very good read and I encourage my readers to click through to the source article (especially since the title is quite close to the URL of my blog).

It is interesting that the author tries to draw a correlation between the Academy Awards that Mr. Gore received and the timing of the IPCC report.  I don’t think that this is anything but coincidence and all of my research indicates that the two are not tied together.  We know that the Academy Awards are always held the same time of the year and it appears that the IPCC was always trying to put their release out at that time of the year.  It does not appear that Mr. Gore’s very well made documentary had anything to do with it.

Gore And Global Warming: Bring Your Skepticism

The Bulletin – February 28, 2007

This is a great article.  The article discusses other potential causes of global warming than human action.  It also takes a fairly cynical look at the politics of the money involved.  If you have an open mind on global warming issues, this article is well worth your time.

Beyond the natural carbon cycle and greenhouse warming, there are some other serious causal explanations for global warming. Among the suspects are, of all things, the sun and its fellow stars.

Global Warming: The momentum has shifted to climate skeptics

Canada Free Press – March 3, 2007

This is an interesting article that is a little difficult to read in its original form. I hesitate to do this, but I feel compelled to insert the entire article here in this forum. I want to stress that I do not own the copyright to the following information – the copyright belongs to the original site and author as they have advertised on their site. I will only do this in rare situations where readability is more of an issue.
