Gore Delivers Remarks on Energy and the Climate

Washington Post – July 17, 2008

Mr. Al Gore recently gave a speech in Washington DC regarding energy.  While many in the blogosphere will call Mr. Gore “Pope Gore” and refer to environmentalists as a religion, in this case, I don’t think that Mr. Gore makes many of the outlandish comments which I have chastised him about. Most of his comments are regarding energy independence, the status of the technology of alternative fuels, and the balance of power.

He does make a few global warming references which are a little hard to defend. He implies that the fires in California are caused by manmade global warming – this is probably not true since California has been enjoying an unusually wet climate for several decades and it appears that this current drought is simply going back to status quo.

Warming Trend: PDO And Solar Correlate Better Than CO2

Watts Up With That – January 25, 2008

Watts Up With That recently did an analysis and sparked a great deal of discussion on the possible causes of global warming. The analysis was done based on the paper “US Temperatures and Climate Factors since 1895” written by Mr. D’Aleo, a meteorologist, AMS Fellow, and Executive Director of ICECAP.

The paper and commentary is about the correlation between CO2 and the average temperature as well as the average temperature with solar activity. The true discussion should be about causality since that is the important issue.  However it is a logical discussion that without correlation there may not be any causality.

Tracking Carbon Trail To Find Why So Much Fills the Atmosphere

Wall Street Journal – December 28, 2007

I have written about the Carbon Tracker service before, but this recent article is very interesting in discussing the lack of understanding that we have in our atmosphere.

Where did all of the carbon go?  It is concerning that we are embarking on a global escapade to reduce, tax, and punish carbon dioxide production but we still can’t answer this very basic question! How does a nation effectively tax carbon production when scientists can’t even tell where 25% all carbon dioxide goes? This begs the question as to if we can appropriately tax the correct polluters and reward the correct sinks.

Russia knows how to prevent global warming – academic

Novosti – May 30, 2007

I need to file this article in the Ridiculous category. I am aghast that anyone would consider the idea that adding more pollutants to the atmosphere would be a solution for pollutants in the atmosphere.  Doesn’t this fall into the field of 2 wrongs do not make a right?

While there is little doubt that adding aerosols to our atmosphere would cool it. The idea of polluting the environment in order to continue polluting the environment is borderline disgusting.

I am reminded of the old margarine commercials from years ago – it is not nice to mess with Mother Nature.

Russian scientists have found a way to prevent global warming of the Earth, the director of the Global Climate and Ecology Institute said

NASA MISSION CHECKS HEALTH OF GREENLAND’S ICE SHEET AND GLACIERS

Earth Observatory – May 30, 2007

This is an article about NASA’s recent trip to Greenland to check on the “health” of the glaciers that cover much of that island. This is a regular activity of these scientists as it allows us to monitor the thickness and the flow of the main glaciers. This year they also added new devices to their repertoire.

A NASA-led research team has returned from Greenland after an annual three-week mission to check the health of its glaciers and ice sheet. About 82 percent of Greenland is made up of a giant ice sheet.

Wanna Pay $7 a Gallon?

Forbes.com – July 2, 2007

First of all, I am not making up this date above.  I know that it is not July 2 yet but that is the date on the article.  I believe the date is representative of the issue of the printed magazine (and we all know that these dates are wrong).

This article by Jerry Flint, a man that has been covering the automobile industry for decades, points out that the only way to aggressively solve the carbon dioxide problem with changes to autos is a dramatic and painful tax. He explains that in many cases the cure may actually be worse than the sickness.  This is similar to my personal feelings except that I  temper his statements by stating that if the science was rock solid, it would probably be worth the investment but if the science is not rock solid, the risk of catastrophe from the cure is almost surely 100% and therefore is probably not justified.

Read the sunspots

Financial Post – June 20, 2007

As those who read this site regularly know, I am firm believer in more research in the sciences of the global climate. It is important to understand, though, that scientists are people and generally have a position to defend or promote.

This particular study is interesting in that it re-confirms other studies that show an approximate 11 year cycle of climate change. This cycle is similar to the solar sunspot cycle however this does not mean that there is a causality here or is this simply a correlation. The author then adds to the argument by referencing another popular theory of cosmic radiation.

Kyoto Destroying European Economy

Classical Values – May 13, 2007

This is an interesting analysis of the the problems in the EU due to their leadership (and lack of following) on the Kyoto Protocol.  While I am sure that many will blame the US for this problem, I actually feel that Presidents Clinton and Bush were wise in not pushing this adoption without the full participation of the 3rd world countries.

I also don’t blame the 3rd world countries for not adopting (or following) Kyoto since they are playing catch up to the industrialized world.  Why should their people starve because they were late to the party of industrializing their nation – something the European and North American countries had been doing since the mid to late 19th century.

The Global Warming Myth?

ABC News – April 20, 2007

Set your VCRs and TiVo! John Stossel, who I think is a brilliant reporter, is doing a story on global warming. I have absolutely no idea what Mr. Stossel will say although this article by him probably gives us some clues. This article goes into several myths of global warming.

Mr. Stossel’s show will be on ABC’s 20/20 on Friday May 4th. It will be titled “Myths, Lies, and Downright Stupidity”. Mr Stossel also has a book by the same title.

MYTH: Global warming will cause huge disruptions in climate, more storms, and the coasts will flood! America must sign the Kyoto Treaty! [broken into 4 sub-myths]

Brazilians Blame U.S. for Global Warming

Angus Reid Global Monitor – April 17, 2007

This article contains a poll on who Brazilians believe is to blame for global warming.  Guess what – it is the fault of the US.  This is unfortunate since most studies point to the massive increase in commercialization in Asia as the huge problem.  Yes, the US is a large producer of CO2 but much of the nation is a large carbon sink.  The Brazilians do have the right to point fingers though since they are such a huge user of ethanol.  The rest of the world should follow their example, if not for climate change issues but also for geopolitical reasons.
