Gore Delivers Remarks on Energy and the Climate

Mr. Al Gore recently gave a speech in Washington DC regarding energy.  While many in the blogosphere will call Mr. Gore “Pope Gore” and refer to environmentalists as a religion, in this case, I don’t think that Mr. Gore makes many of the outlandish comments which I have chastised him about. Most of his comments are regarding energy independence, the status of the technology of alternative fuels, and the balance of power.

He does make a few global warming references which are a little hard to defend. He implies that the fires in California are caused by manmade global warming – this is probably not true since California has been enjoying an unusually wet climate for several decades and it appears that this current drought is simply going back to status quo.

Lightning spurs hurricanes

Lately, it appears that almost every week we get new information regarding the formation of weather on our planet. This article pertains to scientists at Tel Aviv University and Open University in Israel have created a correlation and a theory between thunderstorms in Africa and the birth of hurricanes over the Atlantic Ocean. As you may remember, many people theorize that global warming is the root cause of a major hurricanes like Katrina that struck the Gulf Coast several months ago.

Global Warming: It’s All In Your Head

This opinion column deals not so much about the causes or truths of global warming but rather the way people deal with the situation. The article discusses that we have not evolved to react to a slow moving danger but rather we evolved to react to swift dangers. The obvious conclusion here is that we either ignore slow moving dangers or we react to them as if they are soon to be upon us. This explains the hysteria of some and the willingness to ‘wait and see’ of others.

…as much as you would like to think that your opinions on the risks and realities of climate change are based entirely on your rational and purely objective assessments of scientific evidence, they aren’t. They are shaped by primordial human brain wiring and anthropological patterns of behavior.
