Lightning spurs hurricanes

Nature.com – May 11, 2007

Lately, it appears that almost every week we get new information regarding the formation of weather on our planet. This article pertains to scientists at Tel Aviv University and Open University in Israel have created a correlation and a theory between thunderstorms in Africa and the birth of hurricanes over the Atlantic Ocean. As you may remember, many people theorize that global warming is the root cause of a major hurricanes like Katrina that struck the Gulf Coast several months ago.

Global warming may spur wind shear, sap hurricanes

Reuters – April 17, 2007

To all of those that think we have this climate modeling stuff figured out, I present this article.  Not more than a few weeks ago there were scientists saying that they had linked global warming to an increase in hurricane activity.  Now, a fairly reputable scientists have published in a reputable science journal that the opposite may be true.

If new models show that different logical conclusions may occur, doesn’t it call into question all of the models that are predicting climate change at a catastrophic scale?  I am not stating the global warming is fact or fiction.  I am simply stating that we need a massive effort to truly understand our climate before we enact extremely expensive controls and standards.

Bill ties climate to national security

The Boston Globe – April 9, 2007

I guess this makes sense. If we assume that massive global climate change is going to happen then we have to assume that the world is on the verge of massive changes.  Nations will crumble.  People will be displaced.  If this is the case, it is logical that the intelligence agencies of the world should analyze what will happen to develop scenarios in how to deal with it.

My biggest concern right now is that these are the same agencies that said there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.  Should we trust them?

Questions for Al Gore

The Patriot Post – May 25, 2006

This article is an open letter to Mr. Al Gore, former Vice President of the United States.  The letter is from Dr. Roy Spencer, a climate scientist who has evidently testified to Congress in the past and it appears has addressed Mr. Gore in testimony. Dr. Roy’s credentials are listed at the end of the original article and they are quite impressive.  Dr. Roy compliments Mr. Gore on a job well done on the presenting of the “global warming theory” but then goes on to question some of the items of “The Inconvenient Truth” movie.

Forecaster Blasts Gore on Global Warming

myway.com – April 7, 2007

This is actually an AP story that was run by myway.  In this story, a top hurricane forecaster has called the former Vice President of the US “a gross alarmist”.  While I am not qualified to make a such a strong statement, I do think that this is evidence of my position.  My position is that we don’t know.  When top scientists such as Dr. Gray have such an obviously different opinion than other top scientists, then we don’t have a consensus.  If we do not have a consensus then the politicians shouldn’t get involved.  Instead, let’s spend time and effort at figuring this out.

Global Warming: Fact, Fiction and Political Endgame

Townhall.com – February 26, 2007

This is a commentary article about Al Gore, his recent accolades for “An Inconvenient Truth”, and some of the background science of global climate change.  It is a very good read and I encourage my readers to click through to the source article (especially since the title is quite close to the URL of my blog).

It is interesting that the author tries to draw a correlation between the Academy Awards that Mr. Gore received and the timing of the IPCC report.  I don’t think that this is anything but coincidence and all of my research indicates that the two are not tied together.  We know that the Academy Awards are always held the same time of the year and it appears that the IPCC was always trying to put their release out at that time of the year.  It does not appear that Mr. Gore’s very well made documentary had anything to do with it.

Congressional Testimony on Climate Change by Al Gore

House Science and Technology Committee – March 21, 2007

I will not make comments on this testimony.  Former Vice President Al Gore deserves more respect than to have me make comments on his opinions and testimony.

Global Warming: The momentum has shifted to climate skeptics

Canada Free Press – March 3, 2007

This is an interesting article that is a little difficult to read in its original form. I hesitate to do this, but I feel compelled to insert the entire article here in this forum. I want to stress that I do not own the copyright to the following information – the copyright belongs to the original site and author as they have advertised on their site. I will only do this in rare situations where readability is more of an issue.

Global warming, hurricane intensity linked

Playfuls.com – February 28, 2007

Interesting article with few stated facts.  This article quotes a study by the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies.  It states that they have been able to prove a link between hurricanes and global warming using satellite data from 1983-2005.

U.S. atmospheric scientists say they’ve found new evidence to support the theory that global warming produces stronger Atlantic Ocean hurricanes.

Working with global satellite data from 1983-2005, the researchers simplified newer and technologically advanced satellite information and aligned it with older records.

“The data says the Atlantic has been trending upwards in hurricane intensity quite a bit,” he said. “But the trends appear to be inflated or spurious everywhere else, meaning that we still can’t make any global statements.”

Expert disputes storms’ link to global warming

The Sun News – February 23, 2007

This is a very informative article that discusses the connection of hurricane frequency and strength to the warming of the climate. The most telling point of this article is that it is obvious that Chris Landsea of the National Hurrican Center does not believe that the two are linked (or at the very least the link is tenuous).

…perception [that global warming is causing increase in hurricanes] is wrong and the statistics don’t bear it out, Landsea told about 200 students and professors

“It’s not a trend, it’s a cycle: 20-45 years quiet, 20-45 years busy,” Landsea said. Scientists currently have no idea what causes the time period.
