Dedicated to the balanced discussion of global warming
Environment News Service – July 7, 2008
The degradation of coral life has been happening for quite some time. I remember multiple articles on the effects of water pollution on coral life back in the 70s and 80s (before the Internet so I can’t point to those articles – sorry).
This article now includes global warming in that threat. Since this is coming from the 11th International Coral Reef Symposium and the organization reportedly meets every 4 years then the problem is at least 44 years old!READ MORE

Carbon dioxide, the greenhouse gas linked to global warming, is accumulating in the Earth’s atmosphere at an increasing rate, according to a new study released by the US government’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The research has renewed concern that the ability of the environment to absorb the gas may be waning. The NOAA study said the average atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide in 2005 reached 381 parts per million, up from 2.6 ppm since 2004. The annual rate of increase, which has been recorded since the 1950s, now exceeds 2 ppm for three of the past four years. This is an unprecedented increase; 50 years ago, the annual increase was less than 1 ppm.READ MORE

While the cause or reality of global warming is frequently debated on this site and many others, the fact that humans can (and have) negatively impacted our environment is rarely challenged. There are innumerable examples of abuse or neglect across the planet even though there appears to be more of an understanding of this activity. If you read this site regularly (or occasionally) you are likely concerned with the environment to some degree and this study will be interesting to you.
This article points to a study that covers the impact that human activity has had on the oceans. It makes a scary claim that humans have severely compromised 40% of the water ecosystems! This is potentially a bigger problem than global warming which only potentially threatens some beach-front properties.READ MORE
The Ellsworth American – December 27, 2007
I have written before on the possible repercussions of global warming on plant and animal life (a few examples are here, here, and here). Most of these repercussions come off as solid conclusions even though they really are just educated guesses on the reaction of the given species. In this case, the author was much more balanced and more fair, as he states that it could be good for lobsters or it could be bad. This acknowledgement that a complicated climate model interacting with a complicated species is not a sure science is refreshing. (Follow the feed link to read the rest of the story).READ MORE
Several days ago, I posted about RealClimate.org’s defense of the 9 ‘mistakes’ that a British court found in “An Inconvenient Truth” (AIT). My review was not well regarded by many at RealClimate as they defended their defense. My point at the time was that extremism is bad in all ways. Even if you think that the world is going to end due to human induced global warming, you must be able to see spin for what it is and confront it.
Conversely, if you think that all this global warming conversation is hooey, you still should not say that everything out of Mr. Gore’s mouth is biased and wrong. We need to evaluate each claim on its own and seriously discuss the viable issues.READ MORE
RealClimate – October 15, 2007
I have suggested that my readers visit RealClimate before as I consider it a fairly well written site. The site has contributions from many people that study the weather for a living (as authors and as commenters) and so they tend to really dig into the scientific details. You can learn a lot from reading the site and the comments are typically quite insightful. They have a direct link to IPCC so they are fairly staunch defenders of that organization and so sometimes they are not quite fair and balanced. They also tend to love their computer models, a devotion that I don’t share.READ MORE
BUUUUURRRRNING HOT – October 10, 2007
Recently, there was a lawsuit in the UK to challenge the accuracies of the famous Al Gore movie, "An Inconvenient Truth" which discusses global warming. I just found out from a good friend of this site that the court has announced their decision that 11 inaccuracies must be described to school children in the UK in order for the film to be shown to them. BUUUUURRRRNING HOT has done a review of this discussion and I suggest that you go to the site and read Scott’s comments.READ MORE
Halfway There – April 20, 2007
This is a very well written blog entry and I encourage you to go to the source article since I am sure that I cannot do it justice. There was a broadcast of “The Coral Ridge Hour” that the author has recorded and transcribed. He then took the transcription of the conversation of several weather scientists, paraphrased some of the comments and added his own pithy comments and editorials.
As you’ll see, even extremists like the good folks affiliated with Dr. Kennedy have abandoned any pretense of pretending that global warming is not occurring. They concentrate their fire instead on the notion that human activity has anything to do with it. The supposed experts in the program also suggest that global warming might be good for us.
