Maybe I am wrong! Most people that know me haven't heard me say that very often. Maybe Mr. Al Gore is correct. I don't think anyone has ever heard me say that! But here we have a technology that may make solar cells live up to Mr. Gore's challenge of several weeks ago. Although, to be honest, if the technology is being discussed on paper and in prototypes now, the likelihood of it making a significant dent in 10 years is not very likely. The Wall Street Journal has a rather cynical look at the state of our elected representatives and their current stance on energy bills. It appears that the rank and file elected representative is quite in favor of doing something proactive to increase energy supply. However, Ms. Pelosi, the Speaker of the House, and her partner Harry Reid, Senate Majority Leader, have effectively stifled anything good (or bad) from their respective chambers just to prevent more energy production either in the form of drilling, nuclear, or traditional sources. This is probably being caused by a "perfect storm" of several events including a slight warming of the Arctic Ocean, a slight warming of the air above the ocean, a change in ocean currents, a change in prevailing winds and possibly even the ozone layer. It is important to note that this does not mean that there is no ice in the Arctic Ocean as it appears that the water off the coast of Canada and Greenland will be ice covered. This is quite concerning. Most of the instability in the ice shelves in Antarctica have been during the summer. Now it appears that this shelf is in danger even though the continent is currently undergoing winter. There have been a rash of shelves collapsing and Nobel Prize winner, Al Gore, spoke of this in his film "An Inconvenient Truth". The degradation of coral life has been happening for quite some time. I remember multiple articles on the effects of water pollution on coral life back in the 70s and 80s (before the Internet so I can't point to those articles - sorry). Since this is coming from the 11th International Coral Reef Symposium and the organization reportedly meets every 4 years then the problem is at least 44 years old! I really do not like the concept of trading in carbon. I think that carbon offsets trading only reward bad processes that are extremely cheap and are a band-aid to the real problem. If it is assumed that we need to vastly reduce the carbon footprint then the buying public should be encouraged to buy energy and products that result from lower carbon emissions and discouraged from buying the carbon rich ones. Trouble In Paradise: Global Warming A Greater Danger To Tropical Species

A team of University of Washington scientists has been studying the insect population of the tropics and concluded that an increase in temperature could many species at risk of extinction. I give more credence to these types of studies to articles on climate models since, in this case, it is possible to do some true cause and effect analysis as well as maintain a control group. The problem with climate models is that they are simply mathematical equations that are developed by mathematicians and then run on moderately powerful computers. The subject of global warming tends to bring out some fairly strong emotions. Earlier this week, I wrote about Dr. Gray's opinion that he is being punished by his views. Also, Mr. Al Gore, former Vice President of the United States, has issued very strong challenges to the world and his marketing arm has compared this problem to WW2. I am starting to get suspicious whenever I see the phrase "Scientists Predict" in a title or opening paragraph. It almost seems that a scientist's prediction is a lot like an appendix: everyone has one. Leibniz Institute of Marine Sciences has now predicted that for the next 8-10 years we won't be seeing any global warming as the IPCC and Mr. Al Gore have predicted (there's that word again). I am looking forward to other scientists standing up in the next few days to "predict" that this "prediction" is not accurate and that their "prediction" is more accurate. On Friday, I showed a preview clip of Al Gore on Sunday's 60 Minutes television show. While my comments were not very flattering towards Mr. Gore, I at least did not call him any names or degrade his intelligence (as he did to others). I did question his motives and will continue to do that. Today, though, I want everyone to see his first TV ad which has the theme of not waiting for someone else to lead through the problem. Former US Vice President and Nobel Laureate Al Gore has called the current Vice President of the United States, Mr. Dick Cheney, a "flat-earther" and compares him to "the one who still believe that the moon landing was staged in a movie lot in Arizona and those who believe the world is flat". Antarctica, Is It Really In Danger?

The fears are that the ice that makes up the continent is melting faster than normal and not freezing back as it usually does with a very even ebb and flow. Carbon dioxide, the greenhouse gas linked to global warming, is accumulating in the Earth’s atmosphere at an increasing rate, according to a new study released by the US government’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The research has renewed concern that the ability of the environment to absorb the gas may be waning. The NOAA study said the average atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide in 2005 reached 381 parts per million, up from 2.6 ppm since 2004. The annual rate of increase, which has been recorded since the 1950s, now exceeds 2 ppm for three of the past four years. Alaska town sues over global warming

I need to file this one under Ridiculous. How can a town in Alaska sue over global warming? To make matters worse, they are suing oil companies and utilities! If they want to sue someone, they should sue you and me. I realize that there has been a lot of discussion on automobiles lately but I also know that a good number of my regular readers are concerned with the automotive industry and its impact on the environment. Some people believe that switching to diesel for our liquid fuel would be a more appropriate and cleaner alternative to using gasoline. I think I was one of the few bloggers that did though since the web is awash with complaints about his statements. Biofuels May Hinder Antiglobal-Warming Efforts

This is a different twist over what I usually propose. In general, I am for increasing our use of ethanol and other biofuels to reduce our CO2 production as well as to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels from the Middle East. Most people are aware that one of the downsides to this issue is the pressure on food that results.
