Regardless of your thoughts on global warming, government waste and inefficiencies are something that most of us can agree on. To have alternative energy programs that are on or off, year after year, is simply a waste. I understand the need to have finite limits to programs (except Social Security never seems to end) but they shouldn't just stop.
Maybe I am wrong! Most people that know me haven't heard me say that very often. Maybe Mr. Al Gore is correct. I don't think anyone has ever heard me say that! But here we have a technology that may make solar cells live up to Mr. Gore's challenge of several weeks ago. Although, to be honest, if the technology is being discussed on paper and in prototypes now, the likelihood of it making a significant dent in 10 years is not very likely. So maybe I am not wrong and Mr. Gore is incorrect after all!
I had a conversation with a co-worker the other day about global warming. Not surprisingly, I get into this conversation a lot. I made mention that a significant minority of the data that is used to decipher our warming is actually modified or estimated. My co-worker was shocked at this so I wanted to share it with my readers.
Cyclone Power Technologies is actively talking about their motor that can gather energy from waste heat. It can also grab energy from non-waste heat and use it to create electricity or propel a vehicle. It is another tool in the arsenal to increase the efficiency and flexibility of our power generation. More effort like this needs to be made available to really reduce our reliance on foreign oil and to reduce our emissions.
Mr. Al Gore recently challenged the US to a goal of 100% renewable energy in 10 years. His lofty goals cited the need for domestic energy independence and his concern that the world would end due to global warming. Many people have questioned the feasibility of this goal and now it appears that California is going to even miss a much more reasonable goal.
Walter Cunningham is one of the astronauts of Apollo 7. He writes about global warming in the latest issue of Launch Magazine and his comments bear considering. Mr. Cunningham is important in this discussion because of his obvious intelligence and past leadership but also in his strong ability in analyzing scientific and political events and drawing conclusions.
I don't have all of the details but it seems that some representatives are trying to force a vote on the US energy policy. Earlier today I wrote about the delay tactics used by Speaker of the House Pelosi, now it seems that Minority Leader John Boehner has brought some representatives back into the chamber to try to force a vote (or at least get more attention to their cause). Maybe we should have Mr. Boehner and Ms. Pelosi switch jobs.
The Wall Street Journal has a rather cynical look at the state of our elected representatives and their current stance on energy bills. It appears that the rank and file elected representative is quite in favor of doing something proactive to increase energy supply. However, Ms. Pelosi, the Speaker of the House, and her partner Harry Reid, Senate Majority Leader, have effectively stifled anything good (or bad) from their respective chambers just to prevent more energy production either in the form of drilling, nuclear, or traditional sources.
There is a lot of controversy over this. I really don't know the right answer. Is it okay for a film maker to have scenes in a documentary that are not what the narrator is discussing? My gut says that this happens all of the time. Also, there was no question in my mind when I saw AIT that this portion of the film was CGI.
The Independent has a calculator that will ask you a series of questions, do some magical math, and tell you your impact on the globe. The questionnaire is Europe based so for the US based readers answer the Europe questions as if the question was about the US (travel domestic and international). Also for the monetary ranges, just assume that 1 US dollar is equal to 1 pound. What's your planetary impact?
There is a very real chance that there will be no ice at the North Pole this summer. This is probably being caused by a "perfect storm" of several events including a slight warming of the Arctic Ocean, a slight warming of the air above the ocean, a change in ocean currents, a change in prevailing winds and possibly even the ozone layer. It is important to note that this does not mean that there is no ice in the Arctic Ocean as it appears that the water off the coast of Canada and Greenland will be ice covered.
Mr. Al Gore recently gave a speech in Washington DC regarding energy. While many in the blogosphere will call Mr. Gore "Pope Gore" and refer to environmentalists as a religion, in this case, I don't think that Mr. Gore makes many of the outlandish comments which I have chastised him about. Most of his comments are regarding energy independence, the status of the technology of alternative fuels, and the balance of power.
This is quite concerning. Most of the instability in the ice shelves in Antarctica have been during the summer. Now it appears that this shelf is in danger even though the continent is currently undergoing winter. There have been a rash of shelves collapsing and Nobel Prize winner, Al Gore, spoke of this in his film "An Inconvenient Truth". It is not conclusive why ice shelves collapse but it is important for us to explore these situations. This story in the USA Today is a prime example of proving this false. Unfortunately, this mountain seems to be the only mountain in the lower 48 states of the USA that has growing glaciers.
The Bush administration continues to struggle with what to do with global warming and carbon dioxide as a pollutant. The Supreme Court ruled that carbon dioxide is a pollutant resulting from the burning of several fossil fuels. This has caused the EPA to try to figure out what to do with this new authority without destroying the economy.
I originally found out about Chuck Norris and his crusade for drilling on US land and territory by reading an article on The Chilling Effect. As my frequent readers know, I regularly make fun of celebrities that use their "star status" to promote the reduction of global warming influences (Laurie David, Live Earth, Al Gore). Other blogs have gotten into that act as well commenting on Sheryl Crow (here and here) as well as other superstars. In fact, there is a great list of "supporters" that make one start to question the education of any superstar.
The degradation of coral life has been happening for quite some time. I remember multiple articles on the effects of water pollution on coral life back in the 70s and 80s (before the Internet so I can't point to those articles - sorry). This article now includes global warming in that threat. Since this is coming from the 11th International Coral Reef Symposium and the organization reportedly meets every 4 years then the problem is at least 44 years old!
John Coleman spoke before the San Diego Chamber of Commerce on the subject of global warming. Mr. Coleman is not your typical weatherman! Some say he is the father of the weatherman on TV (not likely) but at the very least he is one one of the most successful. A full profile is available for him on Wikipedia but among his many accomplishments, he was the first weatherman on the national morning talk shows (remember David Hartman?) and also founded The Weather Channel.
Jim Hansen of NASA must have finally gone off the deep end. While the man is probably brilliant, his call to put the CEOs of companies on trial for global warming is one of the most radical statements that I have heard in this global warming discussion. He states that he is 99% certain that carbon dioxide has already passed the safe level.
This is an interesting study regarding the cost of hybrids. With the price of gas so high, many people are considering a hybrid for their go to work car even if they have a larger vehicle for hauling the kids to the soccer game. The folks at Yahoo! Green did a simple cost analysis which I am not sure is 100% accurate but at least gets you thinking a bit. I recreated their spreadsheet for your review. If it is assumed that we need to vastly reduce the carbon footprint then the buying public should be encouraged to buy energy and products that result from lower carbon emissions and discouraged from buying the carbon rich ones. He sings their praises as a study tool but appears to feel that they have limited value as a prediction tool. In this video clip, Dr. Kesten Green of Monash University does a fairly credible job of casting doubt on the IPCC predictions that are based on these models.
Typically, RealClimate.org is filled with very useful (and sometimes difficult to grasp) scientific discussion. I have frequently commented about their site and usually I am complimentary (although they have slammed this site a few times). Unfortunately, their latest article is reprehensible or at least foolish. I commented on their site but I don't expect that my criticisms will survive their moderation. If they do publish it, I am sure their many supporters will condemn me. I am reproducing the bulk of my opinions here for you to decide.
I probably blast former Vice President Al Gore more than anyone else on this site. While my views on the cause of global warming are very neutral, my frustration with this powerful politician is enormous. He has taken the opportunity of the massive tragedy in Myanmar (in excess of 22,000 as I write this) to push his global warming strategy and message. Watch the video below and then read my comments following it: (Follow the feed link to read the rest of the story).

A team of University of Washington scientists has been studying the insect population of the tropics and concluded that an increase in temperature could many species at risk of extinction. I give more credence to these types of studies to articles on climate models since, in this case, it is possible to do some true cause and effect analysis as well as maintain a control group. The problem with climate models is that they are simply mathematical equations that are developed by mathematicians and then run on moderately powerful computers.
The subject of global warming tends to bring out some fairly strong emotions. Earlier this week, I wrote about Dr. Gray's opinion that he is being punished by his views. Also, Mr. Al Gore, former Vice President of the United States, has issued very strong challenges to the world and his marketing arm has compared this problem to WW2. So it is no surprise when John Coleman, the founder of The Weather Channel, says, "It is the greatest scam in history. I am amazed, appalled and highly offended by it. Global Warming; It is a SCAM."
I am starting to get suspicious whenever I see the phrase "Scientists Predict" in a title or opening paragraph. It almost seems that a scientist's prediction is a lot like an appendix: everyone has one. Leibniz Institute of Marine Sciences has now predicted that for the next 8-10 years we won't be seeing any global warming as the IPCC and Mr. Al Gore have predicted (there's that word again). I am looking forward to other scientists standing up in the next few days to "predict" that this "prediction" is not accurate and that their "prediction" is more accurate. Anyone have a spare crystal ball?
Once again, we see an example of how the climate models that are predicting the end of the world, as we know it, have not taken into account some important factors. Granted, this particular article is discussing another model (or at least calculation and prediction). It still points out that our models are far from complete and we need to spend more money and effort to increase this capability. I try to respect everyone's opinions and give them free voice to share their thoughts on this site as long as it is respectful (if the comments aren't respectful, I pull them). In this case though, I want to answer a question that was posed in a comment. The question was great, and I appreciate the effort. Hopefully, I can shed a few thoughts on the subject that are worthwhile. The question, basically, is "What should be the baseline temperature for measuring variations that are man-made or natural?"
Today is Earth Day. Regardless of your feelings about the cause or realism of global warming, you probably would not be reading this site if you didn't have some level of concern for the health of the planet. Earth Day is not about global warming but rather a general understanding that we need to take care of our planet as best that we can. It's resources are, by definition, limited. At least as of this writing, it is the best place in the universe that we know of that can support human life - in fact it is the only place.
On Friday, I showed a preview clip of Al Gore on Sunday's 60 Minutes television show. While my comments were not very flattering towards Mr. Gore, I at least did not call him any names or degrade his intelligence (as he did to others). I did question his motives and will continue to do that. Today, though, I want everyone to see his first TV ad which has the theme of not waiting for someone else to lead through the problem.
Former US Vice President and Nobel Laureate Al Gore has called the current Vice President of the United States, Mr. Dick Cheney, a "flat-earther" and compares him to "the one who still believe that the moon landing was staged in a movie lot in Arizona and those who believe the world is flat". Mr. Gore did go on to say that judgement was a little harsh but not far from the truth.
With all of the fervor these days about the dangers of global warming many people are concerned about the fate of Antarctica. The fears are that the ice that makes up the continent is melting faster than normal and not freezing back as it usually does with a very even ebb and flow. The concerns are that this will eventually raise the sea level enough to put major cities and land masses under water and leave millions of people homeless and/or even dead. The majority of people are up in arms over the thought of global warming and indeed they want the United States to sign the Kyoto Treaty and agree to reduce our emissions of greenhouse gases.
“The earth has a fever.” This was a statement from Nobel Prize winning documentarian, Al Gore. Increasingly the view of mankind by mankind is that of intruder. In many ways it would seem that we are the earth’s enemy and our very existence is depleting the earth of resources that could keep an environmental balance.
We know the Earth is getting warmer. The International Panel on Climate Change predicts a global temperature rise of about 5C by the end of this century. That’s enough for major changes. Like in rising seawater levels, in food production and rainfall. Knowing why we are in this fix is the first step to doing something about it. Yes, that’s you and me.
Carbon dioxide, the greenhouse gas linked to global warming, is accumulating in the Earth’s atmosphere at an increasing rate, according to a new study released by the US government’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The research has renewed concern that the ability of the environment to absorb the gas may be waning. The NOAA study said the average atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide in 2005 reached 381 parts per million, up from 2.6 ppm since 2004. The annual rate of increase, which has been recorded since the 1950s, now exceeds 2 ppm for three of the past four years. This is an unprecedented increase; 50 years ago, the annual increase was less than 1 ppm. If they want to sue someone, they should sue you and me.
I realize that there has been a lot of discussion on automobiles lately but I also know that a good number of my regular readers are concerned with the automotive industry and its impact on the environment. Some people believe that switching to diesel for our liquid fuel would be a more appropriate and cleaner alternative to using gasoline. I am not sure that the chemistry really works out but I hope that the industry continues to evolve.
While the cause or reality of global warming is frequently debated on this site and many others, the fact that humans can (and have) negatively impacted our environment is rarely challenged. There are innumerable examples of abuse or neglect across the planet even though there appears to be more of an understanding of this activity. If you read this site regularly (or occasionally) you are likely concerned with the environment to some degree and this study will be interesting to you.
More studies and more contradictory conclusions! I feel like a broken record sometimes in this discussion of global warming and causality. As soon as one scientist puts out a hypothesis, another puts out a contradictory or modifying hypothesis. Perhaps the key thing to understand is that these aren't facts but conclusions that have been reached by individuals. Carbon Cycle
I must say that I have enjoyed the last year and I continue to think that the discussion on this topic is still very relevant. I [...]

This is a different twist over what I usually propose. In general, I am for increasing our use of ethanol and other biofuels to reduce our CO2 production as well as to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels from the Middle East. Most people are aware that one of the downsides to this issue is the pressure on food that results. This article points out that the conversion of non-agrarian land to crop land will result in a net spike of increased carbon dioxide release.
Watts Up With That recently did an analysis and sparked a great deal of discussion on the possible causes of global warming. The analysis was done based on the paper "US Temperatures and Climate Factors since 1895" written by Mr. D'Aleo, a meteorologist, AMS Fellow, and Executive Director of ICECAP.
The plastic trash in the Pacific Ocean will not affect global warming. Since this site is dedicated to the discussion of global warming, I assume that my readers will be interested in this very disconcerting story on the massive amounts of plastic trash that is floating in the Pacific Ocean that resembles a "chunky soup" analogy. The density of the trash makes one feel like "it is everywhere." While these improvements are good, I have repeatedly called for better efforts in computer modeling and analysis and these still did not receive the attention that they deserved.
There is no doubt that it is difficult to make a real difference in changing the waste of our precious resources. While Al Gore may say that it is simple to make a major impact, the sad reality is that it isn't. It takes considerable effort to make a major change and this underpins how difficult it would be to reverse mankind's creation of carbon dioxide.
I am not a lover of carbon trading. I have complained about them multiple times. However, I plan on discussing how companies are trying to be "green" and also how they are trying to profit from that effort - at least in the court of public opinion if not on their balance sheet.
This story has been floating around the media for some time and I suppose it is time that I discuss it as well. It wouldn't be such a big deal except that Mr. Al Gore, former Vice President of the United States and Nobel prize winner declared the debate over and that there was a consensus among scientists. Of course, the first thing that happens with that kind of grandiose statement is the naysayers raise their hands REAL HIGH!
