Most people that read this site know that I get frustrated by the many absurd statements that both sides make regarding the subject of global warming. I am regularly frustrated by the claims and accusations that occur. I would really like to throw this entire conversation back to the scientists and tell them to not make any statements, claims, or predictions until they have good hard science to back it up. I also want them to compare those claims of damage with claims of damage from all other bad things and offset the good things of the status quo.

That said, I think we can all get behind this GREEN claim. I picked this up over at Politically Incorrect Humor. Jump over there to see more.

Bill Nye ‘The Science Guy’ was on MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow show this past Wednesday, discussing the latest round of snowstorms and if climate change is responsible. Nye told Maddow that the people who are saying that the snowstorms around Washington D.C. disproves climate change are almost ‘unpatriotic’.

Nye also said that he felt from his experience that global warming denial could be attributed to generational factors, like his personal observations that older people have a much harder time grasping how billions of people could affect the thin atmosphere. He felt that younger generations are more accepting of this possibility.

Probably the weakest argument that Nye made was that the IPCC (and the non-mentioned Al Gore) received a Nobel Peace Prize from their scientific ‘discovery.’ This is almost certainly not true – the IPCC did not claim to make any discoveries and, in fact, were only charged with understanding the currently accepted science. These same winners include those involved in the CRU ClimateGate scandal, the shrinking glaciers of the Himalayas, and the Netherlands being below sea level. A similar body of Nobel prize awarders also awarded a prize to President Barack Husein Obama for making the world a safer place.

You can watch the short version of the interview here courtesy of YouTube.

Of course, prior to this clip, Ms. Maddow went on a tirade regarding some stupid claims that because it was snowing in Washington, that global warming was not real. She included comments by Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity and Senator Inhofe. Her innuendo was that these comments were stupid and baseless.

She was correct, the storm in Washington DC had nothing to do with global warming. However, she conveniently left off other stupid reports of short term weather phenomena such as blaming Atlanta’s drought of 2009 on global warming. Her unbalanced reporting only shows that she is willing to blame one group for stupid reporting but accepts the stupid reporting of another group for the same mistake. As I have complained on this site before, both sides tend to make some stupid claims.

So now, I leave you with her full clip. You decide. Is Ms. Maddow correct? Most likely. Is Ms. Maddow fair? Was Nye fair to say old people cannot make a reasoned decision based on scientific evidence? Who is worse – the bad reporting of Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity or the bad reporting of Rachel Maddow?

Is Scott Adams’ Dilbert making fun of the current ClimateGate controversy?

In ClimateGate, really smart researchers on the climate took a bunch of data and made some conclusions. They didn’t think their pointy-haired constituents that paid their salaries deserved to have all of the data – instead they gave us a thimble of the data. Of course, in their case they didn’t tell us to wear the thimble like a hat – they just said that we should trust them since they are scientists and know what is good for us. In fact that big pile of paper that Dilbert is carrying doesn’t exist from Paul Jones and his friends – they threw the pile of paper away and just left the thimble!

<img src="http://dilbert.com/dyn/str_strip/000000000/00000000/0000000/000000/70000/5000/400/75451/75451.strip.gif" alt="Dilbert.com" >="" height="120" width="385" border="0" />

This is one of the few times that I have sympathized with pointy-haired boss!

PS I do want to do a quick side note on Dilbert and Scott Adams. I enjoy the humor of this strip very much. To Mr. Adams credit, he makes it possible to embed his strips into blogs very easily from his site. I wish more political cartoonists were as aware as Mr. Adams and let us use their wit to help us make a point.

I have often complained that carbon offset credits just don’t make sense. I don’t think that they will do anything to create better behavior and think it is simply a shell game that will only end up lining someone’s pockets.

But I appear to be in the minority in this view. So I ask those that disagree with me isn’t what is good for the goose good for the gander as well? I just found this website:

CheatNeutral

What is Cheat Offsetting?

When you cheat on your partner you add to the heartbreak, pain and jealousy in the atmosphere.

Cheatneutral offsets your cheating by funding someone else to be faithful and NOT cheat. This neutralises the pain and unhappy emotion and leaves you with a clear conscience.

This site says that it is satirical, which is good. But, shouldn’t it be real? If one believes that you can cheat on emissions with offsets, surely you can do the same with sex.

There is a lot of controversy over this. I really don’t know the right answer. Is it okay for a film maker to have scenes in a documentary that are not what the narrator is discussing? My gut says that this happens all of the time. Also, there was no question in my mind when I saw AIT that this portion of the film was CGI.

Of course, I didn’t know that it came from the movie “Day After Tomorrow” at the time but then I didn’t watch the credits and I am sure that he mentions them in the credits. I have long lost my copy of the movie so I can’t check that fact. If someone still has their copy of the DVD, please skip through to the end and check to see if the proper credit is given. You can leave a comment below to let us all know the truth.

If Mr. Gore did give credit to the movie, then it really isn’t a hoax as some people have claimed but perhaps the SPPI should update their count to 36 since this really is spin on the part of former Vice President Gore.

Typically, RealClimate.org is filled with very useful (and sometimes difficult to grasp) scientific discussion. I have frequently commented about their site and usually I am complimentary (although they have slammed this site a few times). Unfortunately, their latest article is reprehensible or at least foolish. I commented on their site but I don't expect that my criticisms will survive their moderation.

Typically, RealClimate.org is filled with very useful (and sometimes difficult to grasp) scientific discussion. I have frequently commented about their site and usually I am complimentary (although they have slammed this site a few times).

Unfortunately, their latest article is reprehensible or at least foolish. I commented on their site but I don’t expect that my criticisms will survive their moderation. If they do publish it, I am sure their many supporters will condemn me. I am reproducing the bulk of my opinions here for you to decide.

To save you the effort of clicking over to their site, 6 of their author panel has challenged the authors of a Nature magazine article to a bet of 2500 Euros if their prediction is not true. They even taunt the scientists to say that surely if they are at least 50% confident in their predictions that this would be easy money.

I find this post to be at best foolish and at worst reprehensible. To make the claim that if someone doesn’t accept a silly bet that they must not believe in their published article is childish. I would expect the same behavior from 10 year old boys on the playground. I am sure that the multiple authors of this challenge thought that this would be a good idea in the heat of the moment but I hope that they have the maturity to realize that it was poor judgment after a few nights sleep and pull this ludicrous article.

Is the new standard that all scientific articles should be judged by in the future? The scientist must not only put his reputation on the line by publishing the article for all to review and discuss but also must be willing to accept all monetary bets that dissenters throw out? To think that this site actually condemned others for paid speaking engagements in NYC a few weeks back. Where is the “discussing ideas and data in order to advance scientific understanding” (their words from their Jan 30 post).

Is 2500 Euros the market rate for a challenge? While I don’t have the personal resources to cover the bet, would the authors of RealClimate.org take the bet for 50 million Euros? Since it is obvious that they believe their predictions more than 50%, this would be a lifestyle changing gift. Unfortunately, I can’t make such a bet because I am not independently wealthy but the absurdity of my suggestion is indicative of their poor judgement in starting this battle.

What happened to the common courtesy of yesteryear when if there was a disagreement between gentlemen they shook hands and engaged in a “gentleman’s bet”. Even the crooks in “Trading Places” only bet one dollar when they ruined two peoples lives. Perhaps we should go back to the time of Hamilton and Burr and these guys can fight for their honor with dueling pistols.

At one time I thought RealClimate.org was populated by scientists that were trying to explain complicated science. I guess I was wrong, it is run by children that want to show that they can beat up on others.

What’s next from Mssrs. Rahmstorf, Mann, Bradley, Connolley, Archer, and Ammann? Will they defend Vice President Al Gore’s recent comments that the massive deaths in Myanmar are due to global warming?

I take back my above comparison to 10 year old children. I believe that they are probably more civilized in that they usually just resort to the loud “TOLD YOU SO!”

I have request for all of my readers that have taken the time to read to the end of this article. Go to RealClimate.org and tell them that this “bet” idea is foolish and they should be ashamed of themselves. Maybe then they will get the hint and stick with discussing science. If you disagree with me, tell me here or tell me there – I won’t even bet you on the disagreement.

I wasn’t aware of this little bit of controversy until I saw a discussion on it over at Michelle Malkin’s site. Evidently, a video that discusses the need for cheap energy has been pulled from YouTube due to copyright violation.

Some are claiming that this is an effort to suppress the conversation on global warming. I don’t agree. Here are my thoughts on the video but first watch the message that is embedded and then read some of the comments on Michelle’s site. (Follow the feed link to read the rest of the story).

My thoughts (I am not a lawyer, so I am not making legal claims here – just common sense):

It seems likely that the information provided in this clip came from a copyrighted piece of work. It really doesn’t matter if it was on a DVD that was shipped out for free or posted on YouTube. It is still copyrighted.

I didn’t see any mention on the CEI clip that certain parts are copyrighted by another company. In essence, that is like claiming that they had full rights to distribute the clip which they obviously didn’t have.

The copyright holder evidently has a different message and goal from CEI and doesn’t like its efforts and investment diluted with this other message. Seems reasonable that since they paid for this footage they should have some say in how it is being used.

I don’t think that this ad is designed as a documentary or for educational purposes. To me it looks like an ad and the CEI general counsel is calling it an ad in his letter to Michelle. To me it looks like it is trying to influence my thinking and my actions. It seems reasonable that the copyright holder should have the ability to say they don’t want their property used in an ad. If the 7 second video segment was included in a 22 minute documentary rather than a 60 second ad, I probably would have different thoughts.

This segment in question is a major part of the ad. If you have watched the ad above, what things do you remember? In my opinion, the most memorable parts of the ad are the new light in Haiti and the poor baby in the incubator. If someone else owns that footage and disagrees with the goals of CEI, I can see where they want some action taken.

The statements on Mr. Gore’s energy usage are actually out-of-date and should be dropped. CEI should stop playing loose with facts and not giving the whole picture. Mr. Gore’s house used to be an energy drain but now it appears that it is not. Obviously, those statements are not part of this copyright discussion but just a signal of not giving a complete picture of the topic.

Many of the comments on Michelle’s site talk about how terrible this is. However, even Michelle’s site is copyrighted and if you want to take one of her columns, you must deal with Creators Syndicate.

This is the same type of amateurism and playing loose with the facts that I condemn the global warming fanatics on. In this case, the message has been lost because they obviously came too close to the edge of the law. CEI should be embarrassed. Could they not find another legal example of using energy for good in impoverished nations?

Hopefully, CEI will re-publish the video with a different video clip embedded to make their point. This would probably be a better course of action than having lawyers argue about copyright infringement. In my opinion, anytime that lawyers get involved the true discussion has been lost.

I know that this tradition is a little strange to my readers in other countries and other cultures. The US has a tradition of playing practical jokes on the first day of April and accompanying the prank with the declaration of yelling out “April Fools”. It seems only fitting on this day of humor to post a few global warming cartoons.

Please enjoy and please laugh a little today. Life is short and it is shorter if we don’t laugh. The cartoons below are small images of the actual cartoons – click through to the original site to see the cartoon at full size.
