McCain wants $30B for clean-coal research, 45 new nuclear reactors

Phoenix Business Journal - June 25, 2008

John McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee for US President, is deriding the Executive branch for their suggestions to curb energy prices as well as the Democratic leadership for its plans. (Follow the feed link to read the rest of the story).

Mr. McCain is proposing more aggressive investment in “clean” coal plants and nuclear energy.  Personally, I am not sure there is such a thing as a clean coal plant but I am all for it if we can make one!  I also think that we need to step up our reliance on nuclear energy and deal with the disposal issue which haunts that technology.

Administration Releases EPA Report, Then Repudiates It

July 12, 2008 - Wall Street Journal

The Bush administration continues to struggle with what to do with global warming and carbon dioxide as a pollutant.  The Supreme Court ruled that carbon dioxide is a pollutant resulting from the burning of several fossil fuels. This has caused the EPA to try to figure out what to do with this new authority without destroying the economy.

As with most issues that revolve around Washington DC, this one is embroiled in politics with both major Presidential candidates chiming in.

The Bush administration published a government blueprint to reduce the U.S. output of global-warming gases, but at the same time rejected the document out of hand — saying it relied on “untested legal theories” and would impose “crippling costs” on the U.S. economy.

Schwarzenegger slams Bush administration on global warming - calls Bush efforts bogus

Crooks and Liars - July 13, 2008

This story is all over the web right now but the best coverage that I found was on Crooks and Liars as they include the video as well as a transcript of the interview. Other versions of the story only include a snippet of the actual interview (a lot like what I have done).

STEPHANOPOULOS: How much of that is due, do you think, to global warming, to climate change?

SCHWARZENEGGER: Well, it’s very hard to say. I mean, one thing we know for sure, and that is we have had a drought for two years in a row now.  … And I think that we just have to be aware of those changes. I’m sure, partially, that it has something to do with global warming, also, because we have just now broken a record.

Global Warming Chief Among Threats to Coral Reefs

Environment News Service - July 7, 2008

image The degradation of coral life has been happening for quite some time.  I remember multiple articles on the effects of water pollution on coral life back in the 70s and 80s (before the Internet so I can’t point to those articles - sorry).

This article now includes global warming in that threat.  Since this is coming from the 11th International Coral Reef Symposium and the organization reportedly meets every 4 years then the problem is at least 44 years old!

Scientists find bugs that eat waste and excrete petrol

Times Online - June 14, 2008

The title of this original article is not quite accurate.  Scientists didn’t FIND the bugs - they MADE the bugs.  The title should be:

Scientists create bugs that eat waste and excrete petrol.

While this doesn’t truly solve the problem of excess carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, it does inadvertently.  Since the process of excreting this oil from waste cellulose and then burning it as liquid fuel is carbon negative, massive use of this synthetic oil would make the driving of cars “good” for the environment and would suck up the CO2 from industrial uses.

Now, I just hope that they have a way to turn these bugs off if they escape from the vat!

Are hybrids affordable now?

Yahoo! Green - May 30, 2008

This is an interesting study regarding the cost of hybrids. With the price of gas so high, many people are considering a hybrid for their go to work car even if they have a larger vehicle for hauling the kids to the soccer game. The folks at Yahoo! Green did a simple cost analysis which I am not sure is 100% accurate but at least gets you thinking a bit. I recreated their spreadsheet for your review.

Several things that don’t add up or that I question:

As carbon market grows, law firms cash in

Boston Business Journal - May 16, 2008

In my opinion, this is wrong in so many ways that I can barely count all of the problems! As my frequent readers know, I rant against carbon trading schemes all the time, so much so that my fingers are starting to be bruised. I have yet to see one that makes sense to me and this story typifies many of the problems. (If you want to stay up to speed on all of my thoughts on this subject, subscribe to the feed for this site).

Antarctic ice threatened by ozone-hole recovery

Nature - April 29, 2008

Once again, we see an example of how the climate models that are predicting the end of the world, as we know it, have not taken into account some important factors.  Granted, this particular article is discussing another model (or at least calculation and prediction). It still points out that our models are far from complete and we need to spend more money and effort to increase this capability.

Recovery of the ozone hole above Antarctica could warm the Antarctic and cause more ice to melt in coming decades, researchers say. As the ozone hole heals, wind patterns that shield the interior of the polar region from warm air may break down, causing warming in the Antarctica as well as warmer and drier conditions in Australia.

APRIL FOOLS!!

I know that this tradition is a little strange to my readers in other countries and other cultures. The US has a tradition of playing practical jokes on the first day of April and accompanying the prank with the declaration of yelling out “April Fools”. It seems only fitting on this day of humor to post a few global warming cartoons.

Please enjoy and please laugh a little today. Life is short and it is shorter if we don’t laugh. The cartoons below are small images of the actual cartoons - click through to the original site to see the cartoon at full size.

Global Warming’s Fever

GUEST ARTICLE:

By Tom Phelps

“The earth has a fever.” This was a statement from Nobel Prize winning documentarian, Al Gore.

Increasingly the view of mankind by mankind is that of intruder. In many ways it would seem that we are the earth’s enemy and our very existence is depleting the earth of resources that could keep an environmental balance.

Global warming is the belief that the temperature of the air nearest to earth is consistently rising. Droughts are blamed on global warming and new products are constantly being developed to help lessen human impact on perceived climate change.

Electric or hybrid cars are thought to provide the best example of how we can reduce carbon emissions that are said to be harming the earth.
