GM exec stands by calling global warming a "crock"

I pretty much ignored the original story about GM’s Bob Lutz saying that global warming is a crock.  I think I was one of the few bloggers that did though since the web is awash with complaints about his statements.  I do need to comment though on his more recent statements that defend his right to say that it is a “crock of s—“.

GM to partner with biofuels start-up Coskata

I am very intrigued with biofuel as an alternative source of liquid fuel to propel our trucks and automobiles down the road. This source combined with plug-in electric technology seems like a very effective method of breaking our addiction to liquid fossil fuel.

GM has been on this site a lot lately (here, here, and here). It is obvious that they are trying very hard to show themselves as a “green” company. I wonder if it is really working.

General Motors announced this weekend at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit that it would partner with Coskata Inc., an Illinois-based renewable energy start-up company that plans to produce ethanol from agricultural, municipal, and industrial waste byproducts.

GM to launch Volt by end-2010 despite skepticism

Reuters – November 21, 2007

Bob Lutz from GM has re-confirmed that GM is still planning on introducing the Chevy Volt in 2010 even though there are some concerns about that timeline.

Typically when this level of concern happens, there are some trade-offs that are put out and the product doesn’t live up to expectations. I hope that is not the “hidden” message that Lutz is actually trying to deliver in this interview.

Mr. Lutz does speak with some sense of urgency and perhaps doom so maybe this really will hit the consumer market on time and, hopefully, will be a raving success.

Interesting article on the global warming problem. Can we change it if it is the fault of humans? I have read some extremists on the subject that say that we need to dramatically reduce the amount of CO2 that we put into the atmosphere. Some say that this decrease in carbon dioxide would need to be in the range of 50% in 5 years. The current proposals in Congress are more conservative – 4% increase in fuel economy per year for 10 years (which is about 34% in 10 years).

Global Wind Day

Today is Global Wind Day.

While there are some problems with relying on wind power for the bulk of our energy needs in the US, wind probably has a place to augment and help us meet our needs, especially if the US doesn’t quickly add more nuclear generation capability!

Heat2Power

There are a variety of techniques and tools that allow an internal combustion engine to capture more of its energy and direct it to moving your car down the road as opposed to sending that energy out of your exhaust.  Most of these tools are difficult to use and maintain.  They simply are not ready for primetime.  However, with the virtual collapse of the automotive manufacturers in the US, it is not likely they are going to be increasing their R&D on getting more performance out of the engines that they make.  It is an unfortunate reality that cars are sold on other things than their efficiencies.

The Anti-Industrial Coup

Mr. Tracinski at TIADaily.com had a very interesting commentary on the recent decision to treat carbon dioxide as a pollutant but not water vapor.  While I think that his end conclusion that this could be the beginning of the end of a representative government are likely overblown, his logic and discussion is worth reading and considering.

We all expect that there will be a contest in Congress this year over global warming and a “cap-and-trade” bill limiting carbon dioxide emissions. After all, the government cannot impose sweeping new controls on our lives without extensive public debate and a vote in Congress that must gain the support of a clear majority of the representatives of the people.

Can I sell you a hybrid?

So once again Americans prove to be a fickle lot.  We just came through a period of record oil prices and now we are enjoying liquid fuel at a price point that is probably as low (adjusted for inflation) as it was in the 70s before the first big oil rush.  Our car companies are in trouble because of lack of money for loans and the general lack of consumer interest in buying cars.  One of the chief complaints about the Big 3 is that they didn’t build fuel efficient cars but instead concentrated on gas guzzlers like SUVs and trucks.  The pundits are all saying they should build hybrids and that would save them.

Pelosi’s Energy Stonewall

Wall Street Journal – August 1, 2008

The Wall Street Journal has a rather cynical look at the state of our elected representatives and their current stance on energy bills.  It appears that the rank and file elected representative is quite in favor of doing something proactive to increase energy supply.  However, Ms. Pelosi, the Speaker of the House, and her partner Harry Reid, Senate Majority Leader, have effectively stifled anything good (or bad) from their respective chambers just to prevent more energy production either in the form of drilling, nuclear, or traditional sources. The opinion even goes so far as to charge that the actions of the Legislature have put 93% of the US energy footprint off-limits to expansion.

The bully children have taken over at RealClimate.org!

Typically, RealClimate.org is filled with very useful (and sometimes difficult to grasp) scientific discussion. I have frequently commented about their site and usually I am complimentary (although they have slammed this site a few times).

Unfortunately, their latest article is reprehensible or at least foolish. I commented on their site but I don’t expect that my criticisms will survive their moderation. If they do publish it, I am sure their many supporters will condemn me. I am reproducing the bulk of my opinions here for you to decide.
