Environmental Effects of Increased Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide

Global Warming Petition Project – January, 1998

This a rather old text. It was one of the first to come out and say that the CO2 effects are being over emphasized and the data is not conclusive. Most people that have followed this subject for several years have read and understood this text but the topic of climate change is gaining increased popularity. If you have only recently started reading about this subject, it is important that you familiarize yourself with this early text.

Global warming melts Andean glaciers toward oblivion

Reuters – June 7, 2007

You will see different versions of this article floating around the internet.  This article discusses the major impact and hardship that will befall the people of Bolivia due to the melting of their small glaciers that are in the Andean mountains.  These glaciers are melting, so the story claims, because of global warming.

If you have read this site for any length of time, you know that some people believe a myriad of evils has been delivered on us (or will be delivered) due to climate change. I have written of several examples of this (here and here and here).  I don’t discount that these glaciers may be melting since the article gives us data to support that claim.  I also do not refute that this will cause these people harm – in fact, my heart goes out to them in their plight.

Greens’ climate plan sees 12-cent tax at the pumps – June 6, 2007

This is an article about the new tax that is being proposed in Canada by the Green party to discourage use of gasoline.  A great many of my readers are in the US so I thought I would do the math for you.  In the US that would be the same as adding 45.42 CENTS PER GALLON!

The Green party wants Canadian drivers to pay an extra 12 cents a litre at the gas pumps as the price of averting environmental “catastrophe.”

Leader Elizabeth May “Right now, the Green Party of Canada is the only Canadian political party prepared to state this obvious reality.” … “If we stop being with the rest of the world and start siding with George Bush, we are global saboteurs and that’s what Mr. Harper is doing right now in Germany.”

A New Global Warming Strategy: How Environmentalists are Overlooking Vegetarianism as the Most Effective Tool Against Climate Change in Our Lifetimes

EarthSave International

This report has been out there for quite sometime but I am still surprised that more environmentalists do not advocate the changing of our diet in order to make a substantial impact on combating runaway greenhouse gases. While CO2 is widely thought to influence the weather of planet Earth, methane is a very large contributor as well.  In my opinion, methane is not discussed because the chances of convincing the large meat eating public to drop their reliance on meat as a protein source is far more difficult than blaming multi-nationals like GM, Ford, and Exxon.

13 years to turn round global warming

Financial Times Deutschland – May 15, 2007

Interesting article on the estimated costs of reversing the human induced effects of greenhouse gases that appear to be causing global warming. I would like to see some more data, specifically:

  1. What is the range of costs that were estimated for this mammoth effort?  Does anyone ever believe these “low” cost estimates when government agencies put them out?  I remember the original cost of the “Big Dig” in Boston at about 10% of the actual expense when it was all over.  Should we be safe and multiply these numbers by 10 to get a real cost?
  2. What is the cost distribution per nations?  My guess is that it is not equally loaded across all the GDP.

Britain pulls plug on Alís big climate change show

Times Online – June 3, 2007

This article concerns the concert to increase awareness of global warming called Live Earth.  The concert series is being planned by former Vice President Al Gore with as many as 12 concerts. The shows have been receiving a fair bit of criticism for their use of energy, which in itself is indicative of the entire movement.

Global Warming Linked to Rainier Forecasts?

KCBS – June 1, 2007

Just a quick post on a lazy Sunday morning. My only comment on this article is that once again we find that our climate models are still evolving and here we have another study/model that says that some of the old models may not be correct.  I sound like a broken record but we really need to spend more time and money on this part of computer technology so that we have more comfort that we are getting this right.  Every time I read about a scientist that says “My study shows that our old understanding was incorrect in this one area” I cringe that there are politicians in this world that want to levy gigantic taxes based on these “conclusions of the month”.

They call this a consensus?

Financial Post – June 2, 2007

What an interesting article. The author begins by saying that his original intent when starting a series of articles was to write about the dissenters of global warming. His belief was that most scientists believed that global warming induced by human activity was occurring and he wanted to give a voice to those few dissenters that remained.  He was sure that they weren’t the kooks that everyone was calling him. He appears to have run into a problem – there are a lot of dissenters in the scientific community!  Of course, if you listen to statements by former Vice President Al Gore and the IPCC you wouldn’t arrive at that opinion.

Scientists Rally Around NASA Chief After Global Warming Comments

E-Wire – June 1, 2007

I was originally sent this as a press release.  Since I currently don’t make a habit of putting press releases on my site, I will reference the release on another site and, as typical, give what I think are the highlights. I would be interested in hearing from you on your thoughts of me including press releases in their totality.  I would tag them as a separate category. Either leave a comment here or drop me a note at soshaughnessey AT Yahoo DOT com.

This is a fairly big event in the scientific community. It is fairly common to find statements from scientific skeptics saying that there are more skeptics out there but they are afraid of upsetting the establishment.  The establishment they most frequently mention is the government.

Analysis that doesn’t matter

This is a totally different type of article and I hope you will indulge me. I typically give my editorial thoughts on an article that is fairly easily referenced on the web but in this case I wanted to explain some basic mistakes of an article that I recently read and then propose my own calculations on the article. I finish this post with some observations. While I try very hard to show arguments on both sides of this complicated issue, by reading this post you will have some idea of my personal stance.

The article in question is on the Deltoid blog and is titled Corrections to the McKitrick (2002) Global Average Temperature Series. It may be valuable for you to click through to that article and read it first before continuing here. Take your time, I will wait.
