Greens’ climate plan sees 12-cent tax at the pumps

thestar.com – June 6, 2007

This is an article about the new tax that is being proposed in Canada by the Green party to discourage use of gasoline.  A great many of my readers are in the US so I thought I would do the math for you.  In the US that would be the same as adding 45.42 CENTS PER GALLON!

The Green party wants Canadian drivers to pay an extra 12 cents a litre at the gas pumps as the price of averting environmental “catastrophe.”

Leader Elizabeth May “Right now, the Green Party of Canada is the only Canadian political party prepared to state this obvious reality.” … “If we stop being with the rest of the world and start siding with George Bush, we are global saboteurs and that’s what Mr. Harper is doing right now in Germany.”

  1. A gas tax to help pay for alternative fuel research is a good idea in principle. But in practice, it ends up being a massive tax on the lower and middle classes, as is the current rising cost of gasoline. Plus I’m wary of more taxes when it’s clear our government has trouble managing the money we already give it. Give the U.S. government a dollar, and it will spend two.

  2. Ironic that one of the countries that would most benefit from global warming, whether natural or natural/manmade, whether permanent warming or temporary warming followed by cooling, would pose this tax.

Also, raise one tax and promise to lower another tax? Pipe dream.
