A NASA Space Sleuth Hunts the Trail of Earth’s Water

JPL NASA – January 3, 2007

This is good but sad news.  I am extremely happy that we are continuing to invest scientific effort and money in the gathering of data and the understanding of our climate.  That is the good news.  The sad news is that there are some in this world that believe that we don’t need to do this scientific process because they already know the answers: the world is going to end due to human fault and we need to spend billions (trillions?) reversing the process.

Myths, Lies, and Downright Stupidity

Yesterday, I told everyone about a special 20/20 episode that is coming up where John Stossel is going to discuss global warming. Here is reference to his book “Myths, Lies, and Downright Stupidity.” I think it is excellent.

I hope you enjoy this read and make sure that you watch Mr. Stossel’s program on 20/20!

The Global Warming Myth?

ABC News – April 20, 2007

Set your VCRs and TiVo! John Stossel, who I think is a brilliant reporter, is doing a story on global warming. I have absolutely no idea what Mr. Stossel will say although this article by him probably gives us some clues. This article goes into several myths of global warming.

Mr. Stossel’s show will be on ABC’s 20/20 on Friday May 4th. It will be titled “Myths, Lies, and Downright Stupidity”. Mr Stossel also has a book by the same title.

MYTH: Global warming will cause huge disruptions in climate, more storms, and the coasts will flood! America must sign the Kyoto Treaty! [broken into 4 sub-myths]

The truth about global warming

Halfway There – April 20, 2007

This is a very well written blog entry and I encourage you to go to the source article since I am sure that I cannot do it justice.  There was a broadcast of “The Coral Ridge Hour” that the author has recorded and transcribed.  He then took the transcription of the conversation of several weather scientists, paraphrased some of the comments and added his own pithy comments and editorials.

As you’ll see, even extremists like the good folks affiliated with Dr. Kennedy have abandoned any pretense of pretending that global warming is not occurring. They concentrate their fire instead on the notion that human activity has anything to do with it. The supposed experts in the program also suggest that global warming might be good for us.

Global Warming Editorial Cartoons

Great blog article.  No matter which argument you believe on the global warming topic, click through to this blog article.  It is a compilation of global warming editorial cartoons.  Have a good laugh.

Here is one of my favorites:

Role of global warming in extinction may be overestimated – March 1, 2007

This is a wonderful article.  It calls for better science.  It says that better modeling is needed to understand extinction.  This is even more complicated when layered onto global warming since now we have theories layered onto theories.

Extinction is a hotly debated, but poorly understood topic in science. The same goes for climate change. When you bring the two together to forecast the impact of global change on biodiversity, chaos reigns.

A new paper published in Bioscience sides with the latter contention, noting that “surprisingly few species became extinct during the past 2.5 million years” despite a series of ice ages.

North America Absorbing Carbon Dioxide At Surprisingly High Rate, Team Reports

Science Daily – October 20, 1998

I have been hesitant to talk about this study that is nearly 10 years old now but I have searched high and low and I cannot find a single reference that refutes the study.  In this study that occured from 1988-1992, it was found that the CO2 levels in the air decreased as the natural westerly flow moved air from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean.  The theory is that the CO2 concentration on the West coast would be X, the generated CO2 production by US citizens would be Y, and the CO2 concentration on the East coast would be some level above X but probably below X+Y since some sinking of carbon would occur.

Car Makers Mobilize Over CO2 Curbs – April 9, 2007

This article discusses how the automotive industry is trying to deal with legislative restrictions on carbon dioxide production of its products. This is all part of the political process which as reader of my blog know I think is premature. When we are still trying to figure out all of the science of this issue, the only politics that we should be discussing is how much money do we spend on doing full and accurate models.

Auto makers are shifting into high gear to protect themselves under a federal global-warming cap they see around the corner. Cars and light trucks generate about one-fifth of U.S. emissions of carbon dioxide, the main global-warming gas, which is produced when fossil fuel is burned. With pressure for U.S. emission curbs intensifying, auto makers are mobilizing to try to shift the potential economic pain onto someone else.

Global warming may spur wind shear, sap hurricanes

Reuters – April 17, 2007

To all of those that think we have this climate modeling stuff figured out, I present this article.  Not more than a few weeks ago there were scientists saying that they had linked global warming to an increase in hurricane activity.  Now, a fairly reputable scientists have published in a reputable science journal that the opposite may be true.

If new models show that different logical conclusions may occur, doesn’t it call into question all of the models that are predicting climate change at a catastrophic scale?  I am not stating the global warming is fact or fiction.  I am simply stating that we need a massive effort to truly understand our climate before we enact extremely expensive controls and standards.

The Great Global Warming Swindler’s List

Thomas Paine’s Corner – April 8, 2007

This blog article discusses the documentary “The Great Global Warming Swindle”.  While I have not had the opportunity to watch this program, I think that the article does a fair job of critiquing the facts portrayed.  It pains me when articles and shows don’t make sure that they have data absolutely correct regardless of what their stance is.  Since it is my contention that we need to fully evaluate all of the data, not having the facts straight is detrimental to the cause.
